In May of 2018, we asked for an update and received the following from Founder & Chief Science Advisor, Cristina Davis. Dr. Davis is currently a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, Davis
Remind us, what was the big idea behind your innovation? Early detection of citrus greening disease to support the citrus industry.
What’s new since your Innovation Awards recognition in 2017? Our company has expanded commercial testing, and we are now operating in Florida as well as California.
Any new innovations on the horizon, that you can share? We are currently utilizing our test for commercial testing in Florida.
What piece of advice would you give to an entrepreneur starting their first business? Partner with experienced professionals when setting up your business. While you likely have domain knowledge in the area you are innovating in, you will need a team to make the idea successful.
What’s your “one thing” that most drives your professional success? Work hard and take advantage of every opportunity to make new connections. As you expand your professional network, you can be a resource for others and benefit from their expertise as well.
What’s great about doing business here? The greater Sacramento region is poised for an explosion of new start-up growth. We have a well-educated population and are situated nearby prestigious academic institutions. With a moderate cost of living and proximity to major transportation hubs, it is possible to have a thriving international business in our area!
The citrus industry in the USA needs help combating a very serious disease threat. Our test offers a novel and rapid way to test if an infection is present in trees. This helps the growers better manage their acreage.
XTB Laboratories emerged from the University of California, Davis, and is based in Yolo County, CA.
